Tinnitus and Hearing Loss

Tinnitus can occur alongside hearing loss, although not everyone with tinnitus has hearing loss.

A hearing assessment can therefore be useful if you have noticed new or persistent tinnitus.

When Should Tinnitus Be Medically Assessed?

Certain tinnitus symptoms require further medical assessment.

NICE recommends considering referral for persistent tinnitus that is unilateral, pulsatile, significantly changed in nature or causing significant distress, depending on the clinical circumstances.

If tinnitus occurs alongside sudden hearing loss, urgent medical assessment may be required.
